Medieval fortified city built by Vauban at the confluence of the Têt and Rotja rivers, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Vauban fortifications network, 2008). Founded in 1090 by the Count of Cerdagne, Villefranche has preserved intact its pink ramparts from the 12th century, its medieval towers and Catalan alleyways. Starting point of the legendary Train Jaune (Línea Pirinexus), a century-old historic train that winds its way to Latour-de-Carol at 1,593 m altitude. Gateway to the Gorges de la Carança, one of the most spectacular trails in the Pyrenees.
